factcheck.org
I'd like to do a little promotional work for factcheck.org. Although I can see a lot of people going to this site and counting up who wins on telling the most/fewest exaggerations of factual evidence (enough with the euphemism, they are lies -intentional or not), I think most people will inevitably miss the HUGE point: politicians lie all the time! It's not just republicans. It's not just democrats. They're all spinning *everything* to paint the best picture of themselves and the worst picture of their opponent.

Just one of the many reasons I have a hard time trusting any politician. I can't help but think that if you want to be a politician, you're the type of person I don't want to be a politician. Said differently, I want people who lead because they have no other choice - people who don't want to be congressmen or presidents. If they don't want the power, I have a lot more assurance that they won't use it. Anyone else feel that way?

Comments:
yup. i feel that way!!!! i've always been kinda scared by those people i've met who always want to be the leader.... cuz among them it seemed to come from some shortcoming... some lack... and well.. that's not really where i think leadership needs to come from. and i think mr. president bush would agree with me. he'd say something like... "you gottta LEAD to be a leader. you can't just (turn head with squinting eyes full of wonder at how someone could run against you. corner of lip rising in smirk) heh heh.. (weird chuckle thing and head bobble) flip flop around like a rainbow trout in the bottom of a rowboat. heh heh (appropriate small town metaphor).

Socrates also had this sediment. In his "city fit for pigs," the leaders were those who least desired their position of power. All perks and distractions were removed, and the idea was to unglorify power. In this way leaders were selected not by who desired power, but by who despised it. Whether or not you should be allowed to "force" someone to lead is an argument I leave to the utilitarians.
